Aesthetic Advisor

What is an aesthetic advisor?

Aesthetic Advisors pay deep attention to artistic works and the work of artists. Unlike curators, they aren’t focused on how art works commercially or canonically fits within a catalogue or space, but instead focus entirely on the relationships between materials, concepts, form, content, context and process. They help artists see what they are doing and put words to it and help them figure out how to do what they want to do next. Drawing on critical resources and their own reflexive practice, they facilitate an open, empathetic and engaged working process. One way to think about it is as if they are a critic who wants to help the work develop into its best actualisation. Another way to think about it is a graphic designer for words, concepts and processes. Aesthetic advisors dive into artists’ work to help them clarify to others and themselves what they want their work to do at a discursive level. Even if the intent is to produce something that is absolutely opaque.

Beyond this, aesthetic advisors can provide textual or verbal material. This material can be used for publicity, funding applications, critical material and other forms of collaboration.
